Management of the Group
Admiral's management team has extensive experience in the direct insurance industry, with two of the Executive Directors having worked for the Admiral business since it was set up in 1993.

Alastair Lyons CBE (54) was appointed Chairman of the Company in July 2000. He is also Chairman of Legal Marketing Services, In Retirement Services, and Cardsave. During the period from November 1999 to June 2000, he was director of Corporate Projects at National Westminster Bank plc. Prior to that he was Chief Executive Officer of the National Provident Institution from April 1997 to November 1999, executive director of Abbey National, with responsibility for the insurance division, from August 1996 to April 1997 and Chief Executive Officer of the National Provincial Building Society from September 1994 to August 1996. He is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and was awarded a CBE in the 2001 Birthday Honours for services to social security, having been a non-executive director of both the Department for Work and Pensions and the Department for Transport.
Henry Engelhardt (50) is the Chief Executive of the Company. He is a founder director of Admiral and was recruited by the Brockbank Group in 1991 to set up the Admiral business, and was part of the management team that led the MBO in 1999. Prior to joining Admiral, he was Marketing and Sales Manager for Churchill Insurance. He has experience in direct response financial services in the United Kingdom, United States and France. He has an MBA from Insead.
David Stevens (46) is the Chief Operating Officer of the Company. He is a founder director of Admiral. Initially the Marketing Director, he was appointed Director responsible for pricing in 1996 and claims and pricing in 1999. He was appointed as Chief Operating Officer in 2004. He joined Admiral in 1991 from McKinsey & Co, where he worked in the Financial Interest Group, London office. Prior to working for McKinsey & Co, he worked for Cadbury Schweppes in the United Kingdom and the United States. David has an MBA from Insead.
Kevin Chidwick (44) is the Finance Director of the Company, responsible for finance, facilities, customer accounts, document services and Gladiator and information technology. He joined Admiral in September 2005 having held a number of senior roles in other insurance organisations including finance director of both Engage Mutual Assurance and Cigna UK. Kevin has ten years experience as a finance director, and over twenty years experience in UK financial services.
Manfred Aldag (56) was appointed a non-executive Director of the Company in 2003 as a representative of Munich Re. He has worked for Munich Re since September 1981 and is currently the senior executive manager at Munich Re responsible for Northern Europe (United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands and the Nordic countries). Prior to that, from July 2001 to September 2003, he was the executive manager at Munich Re responsible for the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Martin Jackson (59) was appointed non-executive Director and chairman of the audit committee of the Company in August 2004. He was the group finance director of Friends Provident plc between 2001 and 2003 and Friends' Provident Life Office between 1999 and 2001. Prior to that he was the group finance director at London & Manchester Group plc from 1992 to 1998 up to the date of its acquisition by Friends' Provident Life Office. He is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Keith James (63) was appointed non-executive Director of the Company in December 2002. He is also a non-executive director of Julian Hodge Bank Limited, HTV Group Limited, International Greetings plc and Atlantic Venture Capital Limited. He is a solicitor and was the chairman of Eversheds LLP (formerly Eversheds) from June 1995 to April 2004. He was a non-executive director of Bank of Wales plc between 1998 and 2001 and AXA Insurance Company Limited between 1992 and 2000.
John Sussens (61) was appointed the senior non-executive Director in August 2004, and is the chairman of the remuneration committee. He is also a non-executive director of Cookson plc. He was the group managing director of Misys plc between 1998 and May 2004 having worked for Misys since 1989, becoming a main board director in July of that year. Prior to becoming group managing director, he was the chief executive officer of the banking division between 1995 and 1998 and was responsible for the systems division between 1989 and 1995. Prior to joining Misys, he was manufacturing director at JC Bamford Excavators Limited. He was a non-executive director at Chubb plc between 2001 and 2003.
Margaret Johnson (48) was appointed non-executive Director of the Company in September 2006. She is Group Managing Director of the international advertising agency Leagas Delaney and has been with that company for the past 11 years. Leagas Delaney numbers amongst its clients Goodyear, Patek Phillippe, and the Nationwide Building Society. Margaret joins our Audit and Remuneration Committees.
Lucy Kellaway (48) was appointed non-executive Director of the Company in September 2006. She is the Financial Times' management columnist, and has been with the paper for the last twenty years, during which time she has held the roles of energy correspondent, Brussels correspondent, and a Lex writer. Lucy joins our Nominations Committee.
